At the insistence of so-called “President” Donald Trump, Republicans held their first-ever midterm political convention, which was ostensibly meant to generate enthusiasm for the GOP as it limps into the November elections trying to pretend that Dementia Don and his administration haven’t destroyed the U.S. economy, humiliated the nation on the world stage, and made the United States a pariah across the globe.
As you’d expect, the 80-year-old Trump was the center of attention, as his adoring MAGA minions lavished him with praise and claimed he had saved the country from the very miasma he has cast the nation into with his idiotic policies.
However, the convention was a massive clusterfuck from the get-go, filled with technical glitches, hyperbolic speeches that likely left viewers shaking their heads, and other miscues that made the event look like something out of a grammar school dress rehearsal.
First came the technical problem with a sign announcing the location of the convention, Dallas.
As HuffPost notes, “Just minutes into the event, dubbed ‘Trumpapalooza’ due to the widespread belief it will be all about Donald Trump, one of the Ls in ‘Dallas’ was visibly missing from a sign on the lectern.”
And then there was the crowd size, which Trump loves to brag about no matter where he speaks.
The American Airlines Center where the convention was held appeared to be far from filled to capacity, with lots of empty seats visible when cameras caught glimpses of the half-full venue.
Also, the giant video screen behind Trump seemed to be suffering from a bad mechanical bug, with random images of previous speakers — including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and economic policy advocate Patrice Onwuka — being projected. It was a bit like a mescaline trip gone bad, with fear and loathing to boot, to borrow a phrase from the late Hunter S. Thompson.
Will any of this help Trump and the GOP come November? Based on the latest polls, that seems unlikely. Trump’s approval rating is in the crapper, prices keep rising, and the Federal Reserve is warning it may be forced to raise interest rates to combat rising inflation.
In other words, it was perfectly emblematic of a man who has never accomplished anything in his life other than his own self-aggrandizement and propensity for sexual assault. If this is what Republicans think will sway voters to their side come November, then they’re just as delusional as their tangerine Führer.
