Puppy killer Kristi Noem could soon be leaving her post as Secretary of Homeland Security in a desperate face-saving move that would have her running for the Senate from her home state of South Dakota, according to The Atlantic.
Fearing she will be impeached if Democrats retake control after the upcoming midterm elections in November, Noem is scoping out the political climate in her home state and considering challenging the incumbent GOP senator, Mike Rounds.
“It’s something people are talking about across the state,” said one Republican involved in South Dakota politics, “and based on everything I’ve been hearing, Mike Rounds would handily win that race.”
White House insiders say Noem’s position as DHS chief is shaky at best, and while Donald Trump says he has complete confidence in her, he would gladly oust her if he thought it would boost him and the Republicans as November approaches and his polls drop even further.
“To get into the race, Noem would have to register for the primary and collect the 2,171 supportive signatures statewide by the end of next month,” The Atlantic’s Michael Scherer explains. “A Noem adviser told me today that she has no plans to leave. But Noem could have an incentive to seek elective office if Democrats remain on track to win back control of the House and launch investigations into her tenure at the Department of Homeland Security. A Senate seat would give her both a professional staff and a fundraising platform to help defend herself.”
Would the controversial Noem have a shot of being an incumbent from her own party? That depends on who you talk to, with one national Republican strategist slamming Rounds.
“Mike Rounds is so unpopular amongst Republican primary voters, he’d lose to a dead dog.”
Maybe, but Noem has more than her share of skeletons in the proverbial closet, including an alleged affair with one of her top aides, Corey Lewandowski. Both are married.
And then there’s the blood of two Americans, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, on Noem’s hands. A majority of voters say they’re disgusted by the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown and the violent actions of federal officers who have repeatedly attacked pro-immigration protesters.
Whatever Noem chooses to do, it certainly seems she’s cognizant of the fact that her popularity is somewhere between herpes and explosive diarrhea.
