It should be clear to anyone who has been paying attention since Pete Hegseth took the reins at the Defense Department that he was chosen by Donald Trump for one fundamental reason: He’s just as thin-skinned and childish as the so-called president.
Whiskey Pete proved his insecurity and ill temper this morning during a press briefing on the two-week ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, which was announced Tuesday evening by the White House.
The Secretary of Single Malt Scotch said he believed the ceasefire would “hold,” to which a reporter responded, “They’re still firing ballistic missiles!”
“Excuse me, why are you so rude?” Hegseth whined like a spoiled two-year-old. “Just wait, I’m calling on people.”
Hegseth: Iran would be wise to find a way to get the carrier pigeon to their troops out in remote locations to know not to shoot missiles—we’re prepared.

A few minutes later, ABC News reporter Luis Martinez attempted to ask Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine.
“First, a question to the general,” Martinez began. “Sir, in your personal opinion, were the risks of the Strait of Hormuz being closed because of the conflict? Were they mitigated early enough in part of the decision-making process that led up to the decision to take action against Iran? And in your opinion, is Iran in control of the Strait of Hormuz? We just heard the secretary say that Iran is letting ships through.”
He continued by asking, “In your opinion, sir, how can the US ensure safe passage?”
Speaking to Hegseth, Martinez inquired, “And also, you said earlier that the president ‘chose mercy,’ but you yourself had said three weeks ago that we will give no quarter; no quarter to Iranian troops. How do you correlate those two?”
Hegseth snapped, ”I try to be nice up here, but you did listen to what I said, right? I laid out the objectives. We believe we accomplished them. And it’s a historic military victory. And President Trump has the option, as the commander in chief, to compel an adversary to the table, which is precisely what he did.”
When he was finally able to respond, Caine told the ABC reporter, “There’s a lot in that question. I’d love to take that offline and answer it, but it was… I’m struggling to find exactly what your question was. And that’s probably me, not you. Okay?”
Martinez tried to reframe his question, only to be cut off by Hegeseth.
“It was an indictment framed as a question. So you’re forgiven for not understanding.”
Martinez again tried to ask his question, only to have the churlish defense chief say, “No, you’ve had your chance.”
Whether he likes it or not, Pete Hegseth needs to either accept the fact that reporters are going to ask tough questions. If he can’t handle that, then he either needs to stop having press briefings or resign his post and go back to Fox News, where he can spread bullshit and lies without any pushback.
