A CNN data analyst has a sobering message for Donald Trump and Republicans when it comes to the midterm elections: It’s going to be even worse than you fear.
Enten said voter turnout in recent Democratic primary elections should terrify the GOP and so-called “President” Donald Trump, comparing this year’s midterm to the 2018 midterms, when Democrats gained 40 seats in the House of Representatives.
“Democrats are already running ahead of where they were in 2018, which was a year in which they did extremely well in the House races,” Enten explained. “Not nearly as well in the Senate races, but that map was tilted against them in a way that this year’s, simply put, is not.”
Democratic turnout this year has been over 25 million, Enten noted, which is much larger than 2018, when 23 million Democrats cast primary ballots.
Host Kaitlan Collins told Enten that Trump often cites his numbers, but only when the polls are favorable to him.
“So, the president quotes you a lot,” Collins said. “I mean, if you’re the White House or Trump’s political operation and you’re looking at those numbers, what are you seeing so far?”
“I’m running scared. You know, look, the numbers don’t lie. I tell it like it is. Whatever the numbers say, that’s where I go,” Enten said. “You see that turnout high so far on the Democratic side? That, to me, is emblematic of a president of the United States who is deeply underwater.”
Enten added that over the last 20 years, the party with the highest turnout has won the House.
Just yesterday, we learned that as many as 8 Senate seats currently held by Republicans are also trending toward the Democrats in the states of Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas.
