Donald Trump is now openly suggesting that the federal government needs to “nationalize” elections in “crooked” states so that he and the Republican Party don’t get destroyed in the upcoming midterm elections.
Trump made the suggestion, Mediaite reports, during an appearance on Dan Bongino’s podcast today, telling the former deputy director of the FBI, “These people were brought to our country to vote, and they vote illegally,” Trump said. “And it’s amazing the Republicans aren’t tougher on it. The Republicans should say, ‘We want to take over, we should take over the voting in at least 15 places.’”
He added, “The Republicans oughta nationalize the voting.”
Though he didn’t say which states he believes hold “crooked” elections, a mention of Minnesota led him to remark, “There’s something in the water up there,” Trump told Bongino. “I love the state, I won the state three times, but got no credit for it.”
In the last three presidential elections, Trump lost Minnesota, and there has never been any proof that he didn’t lose fair and square.
Of course, Trump’s comments shouldn’t surprise anyone who knows him and his greatest fears. Specifically, he has read the polls and understands that the GOP is going to lose in a landslide come November. The party has already seen major losses in off-year special elections, even in deep red states such as Texas.
If Democrats do indeed take control of the House and Senate in the midterms, Trump also realizes that he will be impeached again for any number of crimes he’s committed since taking office 13 months ago. He already holds the dubious distinction of being the only president in US history to be impeached twice, and if the expected Democratic landslide is large enough, Trump is terrified he’ll be removed from office, making him the only president in history to ever be booted from the White House.
Elections are run by states, and that’s the way the Founding Fathers wanted it. If Trump gets his way, this country will become nothing but a tinpot dictatorship led by criminals as bad or worse than Dementia Don.
