Did you know that anytime you’re hungry, you can eat a healthy meal for the low low price of $3?
That’s what Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins proudly proclaimed recently during an appearance on the News Nation, a pro-Trump right-wing network.
Despite the continued rise of food prices and skyrocketing grocery bills for the nation, Rollins smiled like a Cheshire Cat and announced, “We’ve run over a thousand simulations. It can cost around $3 a meal for a piece of chicken, a piece of broccoli, a corn tortilla and one other thing. And so, there is a way to do this that actually will save the average American consumer money.”

Chicken, broccoli, and a tortilla is a healthy meal? Maybe if you’re on a diet so you can drop 20 pounds in a month’s time.
Rollins’ ridiculous assertion comes in the face of evidence to the contrary.
The latest Consumer Price Index shows that groceries increased in price by 0.7% in December. And some items, such as beef, are up as much as 16.4% over the past year, USA Today reports, adding, “In December, the cost of dairy and related products rose 0.9%. The price of cereals and bakery products increased 0.6%. Fruits and vegetable prices jumped 0.5%, and nonalcoholic beverages also increased 0.4%.”
The rent may be too damn high, but vittles are also setting us all back more and more each and every month. If you doubt that, just compare a receipt from your recent trip to the grocery store to one from November or December.
Rollins got plenty of online correction and mockery for her ridiculous assertion.

The USDA has finally solved hunger: just eat 1/4 of a meal and call it 'Precision Nutrition'. If we model hard enough, perhaps we can simulate the feeling of being full. A truly modest proposal — Jonathan Swift Jr.
Private jets and tax breaks for them and their rich friends, and one piece of broccoli *AND* a tortilla for you!🤦♂️ https://t.co/Nb3qhrSISR
