The jobs report for December was released this morning by the Trump administration, and the numbers are not good, showing that a mere 50,000 jobs were created, meaning the U.S. unemployment rate is now at 4.4% and average hourly earnings only inched up by 0.3%, not exactly the rosy picture the White House has been predicting each time they receive more bad economic news.
Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo discussed the job numbers with a panel, admitting that the figures were not good before a member of the panel tried to blame a lack of skilled workers for the lack of robust job creation.
“The jobs numbers are weaker than expected, but the market is focused on what it will mean for the Federal Reserve and whether or not the Fed is going to actually cut interest rates further,” Bartiromo remarked.
“If we had a report that was much better than expected, even though that would be good news, the market may have traded down because of what it means for the Fed!”
Conservative economist Stephen Moore chimed in, “The question is why aren’t we creating more jobs? I think the answer is very simple, we have a severe labor shortage in America!”
“We have more jobs available than the qualified skilled workers to fill them… Yeah, I’m disappointed at this job number, we’d like to see it higher. We’ve got to get more people in the workforce!”
If there’s a lack of skilled workers, then shouldn’t the government be investing in programs that would train people to do those occupations? Instead, the Trump team continues to cut back on funding for education, job training, job retention, and investments in new technologies such as clean energy that are the future of the labor market.
As usual, conservatives think workers are to blame for the lack of jobs. That just shows how out of touch they are with what’s happening in this country as the rich get MUCH richer and the rest of us try to hang on by our fingernails.
