Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz said this morning there’s no reason for millions of Americans to worry that they may not have any health insurance in 2026 because his boss, Donald Trump, has a secret plan for fixing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which is also known as Obamacare.
More than 45 million people in the United States are enrolled in health coverage through the ACA, but many could lose their coverage at the end of 2025 if government subsides aren’t renewed. Many policyholders could see their premiums increase by as much as 100 percent without the subsidies.
Oz was a guest on Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo’s program, and was asked, “Do you have thoughts on how these ACA subsidies should move forward after they expire this year?”
“You always ask the right questions, Maria,” the obsequious Oz replied. “So I spent a good part of the weekend with the White House working on exactly the answer to that question.”
“We have lots of great ideas, but I don’t want to show our cards,” he added. “As the president often says, why would I telegraph you what we’re going to do?”
Of course, Trump has been saying since 2017 that he would replace the ACA with “insurance for everybody,” but has yet to release a single detail about his plan, which doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.
Here’s a thought: Why doesn’t the United States do what nations such as Canada and Great Britain do and introduce single-payer healthcare to the American people? Because that would mean Trump has to rescind his tax cuts for his billionaire buddies or add trillions more the federal debt.
Healthcare is a basic human right. The fact that so many of us in this country may be about to lose access to the very lifeline that keeps us alive is a disgrace. The richest nation in the world can do better, but only if we replace every Republican with someone who actually gives a damn about their constituents.
