Even if Republicans lose as badly as pollsters are predicting in the upcoming midterm elections and Democrats take control of both the House and Senate, something Donald Trump and his GOP allies did in 2025 could make it impossible for Democrats to govern or pass any significant legislation, according to veteran journalist Dan Rather, who shared his thoughts on Substack.
Remember the “Big Beautiful Bill” Trump rammed through Congress just last year? Most of the deepest budget cuts to vital human service programs don’t take effect until 2027, when Democrats are in control of the legislature.
“It’s not just the current mess we’re in, but what’s coming next,” Rather writes. “It is not hard to see why Trump is waiting until after the election to launch the most potentially devastating part of his agenda.”
Effective January 1, 2027, federal spending on Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be drastically slashed, which could lead to hospital closures in rural areas and the closing of food banks that provide food assistance to the neediest Americans.
The cuts are estimated to save $1 trillion in federal funds, but that’s small potatoes compared to the $4 billion in tax cuts Trump has given to the rich Americans, i.e. Elon Musk.
“Is this who we are?” Rather writes. “Targeting the most vulnerable among us and labeling it as a way to root out “waste, fraud and abuse” while giving rich people tax cuts? It is not only amoral, but it is also tone-deaf. So is deporting legal immigrants and abandoning their children. Trump and his MAGA loyalists may not understand how unpopular these policies are, but indications increase that voters are listening and not liking what they hear.”
The answer, of course, is this is exactly who we are with Donald Trump and the GOP in control of everything. Their cruelty knows no bounds, and their lust for campaign contributions from billionaires and multinational corporations makes them deaf to the cries of needy Americans, including the children they claim to care so much about.
Is there a solution to this coming national devastation? Yes. Voting Blue in every election and never letting Republicans have power again at any level. Only then can this country live up to its promise.
