Former Special Counsel Jack Smith recently made it clear that if Donald Trump’s Justice Department decides to come after him, he may reveal previously “unreleased” evidence against the so-called president as a way of countering any move by the administration’s DOJ.
The New York Times reported that Smith spoke at the Cosmos Club in Washington in April, saying he has more than a few cards left to play if he’s charged with any crimes.
“Jack Smith, the special counsel who twice indicted President Trump, accused the Justice Department of having been ‘corrupted’ by Trump loyalists he claimed were demolishing its credibility and seeking to undermine the rule of law.”
“Mr. Smith’s remarks, made last month in a private discussion at the Cosmos Club in Washington, represented his sharpest criticism of the department since leaving his post early last year.”
Here’s what Smith had to say: “We have a Department of Justice today that targets people for criminal prosecution simply because the president doesn’t like them. We have a department that fails to move on cases because they might uncover facts that are inconvenient to narratives the president would like to press.”
The Times notes that Trump’s GOP allies in Congress are well aware that Smith could do significant damage to Trump (and by extension to them) just months before the midterm elections, which are already expected to be a bloodbath for Republicans.
“And while Republicans publicly sought to spin as a victory testimony Mr. Smith gave to a congressional panel behind closed doors in February, they privately conceded that he handled himself well and posed a serious threat to Mr. Trump, given that he had a public forum to publicize his investigations.”
Imagine it: Smith holds a press conference right as the midterms are heating up and spills all the dirt on Trump, including crimes Donnie committed. Not only would it make for great television, but it might also give Democrats a large enough majority in the House and Senate to impeach Trump and remove him from office.
