Speaking to Republicans Tuesday at the Kennedy Center on the fifth anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol, Donald Trump suggested that the 2026 midterm election should be canceled to prevent Democrats from taking control of Congress and impeaching him, according to The Daily Beast.
“I won’t say cancel the election, they should cancel the election because the fake news will say ‘he wants the elections canceled. He’s a dictator.’ They always call me a dictator.”
He added, “But even if it’s successful, they don’t win. I don’t know what it is. There’s something psychological, like you vote against. But they say that when you win he presidency, you lose the midterm.”
The so-called “president” also told members of the GOP that he had already provided them a “roadmap to victory” and demanded they “own” the issue of healthcare by giving money to people instead of health insurance companies.
“You gotta win the midterms,” Trump said. “Because if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just going to be, I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me. I’ll get impeached.”
Trump is telegraphing what he plans to do as November draws closer: He has every intention of creating some reason that the 2026 midterms cannot be held. He will either declare a national emergency or claim he’s found massive election fraud across all 50 states, meaning that a free and fair election cannot be guaranteed.
The United States needs to learn from history. Specifically, from what Hitler and the Nazis did in Germany, circa 1930, as explained by the Deutschland Museum:
“Immediately after taking office as Chancellor on 30 January 1933, Adolf Hitler went to the country to obtain a popular mandate. Propaganda, violence and intimidation meant that the ensuing election was anything but free or fair.”
“Despite the illegality and violence of its campaign, the NSDAP still only managed to gather 44% of the vote. This was an improvement on the previous election, but still fell short of an absolute majority. Forming a coalition government with other right-wing and nationalist parties, the new NSDAP ministers first banned opposition parties, before turning on its own conservative allies, who were forced to dissolve. Germany was now a one-party state and would not see another election until after the Second World War.”
Banned opposition parties. Will Trump and the narrow GOP majority do the same? What would stop them from doing so? The right-wing Supreme Court? Nope. The media? No.
Only WE THE PEOPLE can stop Donald Trump. We have to vote in record numbers and demand accountability. If we don’t, we will wake up on November 4, 2026 and find ourselves living in a hell of our own creation.
